http://smolka.wicmb.cornell.edu/ Our research is focused on the DNA damage checkpoint, an evolutionary conserved signaling pathway that functions to protect genomic integrity. We are particularly interested in understanding how dysfunctions in the DNA damage checkpoint kinases lead to genomic instability and, consequently, cancer.

Cancer cells have unstable genomes with alterations, such as chromosomal translocations and deletions, often leading to cellular changes that improve cancer cell fitness, allowing tumors to be more aggressive and resistant to therapy.
